Barbour Collection - Tooley, Tooly, Toole | |
The Barbour Collection of vital records is a transcribed collection of the Connecticut vital records covering the years from 1630 to 1850, arranged in alphabetical order for the state. There are several editions of this collection and we use the "slip" edition. This is the only edition that maintains the original spelling of the surnames. Any possible transcription errors are placed in brackets, giving us a much better picture of what the original document says. The other editions lump surnames under common spellings and tries to "guess" when something becomes too hard to read, therefore not giving us a true picture. This collection as with any collection does have transcription errors and not exactly complete as some towns were missed, but all and all a great resource to use.
New Horizons Genealogy has a nice section on the Barbour Collection. They also have information on the Ricker Compilation of Vital Records of Early Connecticut - by Jacquelyn Ladd Ricker, which is based on the Barbour Collection of Connecticut town vital records and other statistical sources.
